The Armed Forces of Nigeria had repelled insurgents the previous Sunday when fighters had attacked the town with anti-aircraft trucks and grenades. Similar attacks were reported in August 2021.

Armed groups often target food and medical supplies. Some observers believe that WFP food storage may attract such attacks.
